Enhancing Safety and Longevity in a Specialist Rehabilitation Ward
Share
Project Overview
Protct contributed to the refurbishment of the Alder Wing at NeuroCare Rehabilitation Centre, a specialist healthcare facility in Havenford supporting adults with acquired brain injuries. The centre undertook the project as part of a wider investment programme to improve patient wellbeing, safety, and durability within high-dependency inpatient environments. The refurbishment aimed to create a calmer, more resilient setting capable of supporting patients who may display unpredictable or challenging behaviour, while ensuring long-term value for the facility.
Design Challenge
The Alder Wing experiences constant movement from wheelchairs, beds, and clinical equipment, placing significant strain on doors and frames. The design team required a solution that would protect door faces and edges from repeated impact without compromising aesthetics or fire safety. Protct was invited to collaborate with the project architects to deliver a robust, easy-to-maintain door protection system suitable for both single and double doors, and compatible with fire-rated applications.
Solution
Protct supplied a coordinated package of door protection products, including curved push plates, rectangular kick plates, and bespoke door edge protectors manufactured to suit 54 mm thick timber core doors. All components were produced from 2 mm thick, impact-resistant polymer sheet, selected for its durability, hygiene properties, and ease of cleaning.
To support a more positive and uplifting environment, the door protection was specified in three calming accent colours—Sunrise Yellow, Soft Green, and Coastal Blue—carefully chosen to complement the interior design of the refurbished wing. Door edge protectors were supplied in multiple configurations, including plain profiles, intumescent-sealed options, and combined fire and smoke seal variants, ensuring full compatibility with FD30 and FD60 fire-rated doors as well as non-rated doors throughout the ward.
Outcome
The refurbished Alder Wing reopened to patients in late 2023. Protct’s door protection solutions now provide long-lasting impact resistance in high-traffic areas, reducing ongoing maintenance demands while enhancing safety and visual appeal. The finished environment supports both clinical functionality and patient comfort, helping NeuroCare Rehabilitation Centre deliver a higher standard of care within a demanding healthcare setting.
